An Unlikely 'Fro

I'm sure by now, everyone knows my pet peeves and annoyances at the gym. Now, I do try to avoid times when I know that these uncouth behaviors might occour. But today, I was completely unprepared for what I saw:

There was a woman, using one of the blow dryers. Not only was she half naked (and we all know my issues with people prancing about naked) but she was actually blow drying her UNDERARM HAIR!!!

EW!!! Seriously, there is absolutely no reason to groom ones pubic hair in a semi-public place!! Who does that?!? Call me over groomed, but my underarms have never been hairy enough to hide a small woodland creature! Am I too low maintence in thinking that it's excessive to have to blowdry and style the hair in your arm pits?

What the hell!?

My Knight in Shining Armor, Circa 1984

I was flipping channels and I was distracted by a commercial on NBC. Apparently, on February 17th, KNIGHT RIDER IS COMING BACK!!! And, yes...David Hasselhoff will be in it!

Could I be more excited!?!?! I remember I absolutely LOVED that show!! I was all about Michael Knight and that black Trans-am, KITT!

I had a Knight Rider Big Wheel. How is that different from a regular Big Wheel? Well, aside from the colors, there was a KITT themed "Control Board" and a hand break. Why does a Big Wheel need a hand break? Really? I have no idea, but it sure as hell was fun to pedal as hard as humanly possible and suddenly pull it so you spun out on the bike!! I also had a Knight Rider backpack. It was blue and came with a Knight Rider lunch box. Seriously, how cool is a backpack with both had KITT and David Hasselhoff silk screened on them?

Back in 1983, I was totally going to marry Michael Knight and have a car just like KITT when I grew up. Don't make fun of me. David Hasselhoff was HOT!! He had the tight jeans, the black leather jacket, the permed hair, the catch phrase "You got it", and of course the car! Who can blame a four year old for crushing on that?!

February 17, you know what I'll be doing!!

Vote Early and Often

That's right, election season is underway, and I am asking for your vote!!

Whha? Bethie getting political? How in the world did that happen?!?!

Well, it's not for your usually candidate. I'm looking for votes in the Chicago's Most Beautiful Cat Contest, sposnored by the RedEye. http://redeye.chicagotribune.com/red-mostbeautifulcat-2008,0,7821715.special

Julie's cat is a finalist!! So please, vote for Linus today!! He's really a good cat, and is fully endoresed by Seamus the Wondercat. Today Linus is up against Cruella (remember, she was the evil woman that tried to kill all the Dalmation puppies...) in the Eartha Kitt Region.

Swimming Lessons--Take 1

The Facts:

--I hear that swimming is good for runners. Where running shortens the muscles, swimming lengthens the muscles.

--I want to try a triathlon.

--I had a shitty day along with a broken nose and didn't want to run.

Soooo...I try to go for a swim. Yeah, it was 45 minutes with a lot of kicking and thrashing about. I probably looked like I was involved in a shark attack.

I tried a kick board, but due to an unfortunate accident as a child, that piece of foam scares the the crap out of me. So after I swore at that inanimate object for a while, I tried floating--and I sank. Finally, I tried self coaching and clearly from my performance I will not be named swim coach of the year. Ok, so my self coaching was me telling my self things like "It's ok, you won't drown. It's only 4 feet of water--You can just stand up.", "You ARE a fish." (Complete with my classic fish face), "Become one with the water." and "Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo..."

I totally need someone to teach me to swim.

Old Froggies

All I wanted was a beer and a crab cake. That’s it, nothing more. So, I headed to my local old-man-dive-bar. They’re good for those two things (also tater-tots, but I had those last weekend).

I was watching the Steelers/Jaguars game and enjoying myself when suddenly I’m flanked on either side by two men old enough to be my father. Now, I hate to sound conceited, but what makes a man of that age think that I want to go out with them? All I could think was “EW!! DIRTY OLD MAN!!!”.

Seriously, one even gave me his card. The irony of it all? He’s an exterminator.

I participated!

Today I got a letter in the mail from CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association). It says: "Congratulations! You have won a CARA participation award for your completion of CARA Circuit and registered races in 2007."

I have to admit, I am a little proud of myself. I'm certain anyone could get this one, because if I can do it, anyone can. The criterion is that you run either 107K in CARA races or at least one race from the following categories:
-5K or 4-miles
-8K, 5-miles, or 10K
-10-miles;
-Marathon, Half Marathon, 20K, 25K, 30K, or 50K

I got it a 5k, 10k, 10miler and 1/2 marathon combo. (I was too lazy to count my mileage and check to make sure they were all Cara Registered/Circuit races.) Barb and my Mom say that I should go to the banquet, I'm still undecided. The two things in it's favor is that the restaurant where it's being held is quite yummy, and the certificate that I'm sure that comes along with it, would be fun to hang in my classroom. Any thoughts?

Resolutions

A new year. A fresh start. A time to make some resolutions!

My goals for 2008 are:
  • Give up pop. (It’s really bad for me…fortunately I’ve discovered caffeinated water! Besides, this allows me more room for beer!)
  • Complete the Disney Half Marathon.
  • Try to be vegetarian during lent (fish and dairy ok).
  • Complete the Shamrock Shuffle.
  • Complete the Flying Pig Marathon (gulp).
  • Complete the Soldier Field 10 Mile Race.
  • Learn to swim so that I can complete a Triathlon. (may be sprint distance)
  • Repeat the Chicago Distance Classic.
  • Earn a CARA Participation Award.

Looks like I have a lot of miles to go! It’s interesting that this year, my goals are races…that’s so cool! (I blame Barb for turning me into a runner chick!!)
