The Ressies are Back

I went to the gym this morning to find it crawling with Resolutionists or "Ressies". What is a "Ressie"? The "ressies" are a rude breed of people who feel the need to make a "lifestyle change" at the start of a New Year, but eventually stop coming to the gym after a month.

While I do agree that having a healthy lifestyle is important, I also think that people need to have proper decorum at the gym. That's where the rudeness comes in. If these "ressies" were at the gym all the time they would know the procedures and be on a set schedule. I would come at a different, non-peak time of day. I don't care that there are other people at the gym. I care that people choose to prance about like their in their own homes. For example, standing on the sides of the treadmill because you're too winded to continue while there's people waiting is just plain rude. Walking about naked in the locker room and popping pimples/picking at your skin in the mirror (yes, she was naked--and should NOT have been) is gross. Telling someone that they have placed their coat in the wrong locker is just ridiculous (happened to me today!).

I have to admit, I did go to the gym at a different time than I usually do. It is possible that some think I'm a "ressie" because I'm usually not there at 9:00 am in the morning. My usual time is actually 3 or 4 hours earlier.

Because I'm poo-pooing on the "ressies" resolutions, I would like to offer the "ressies" a list of alternate resolutions. Ones that wouldn't annoy the crap out of regular gym-goers, and these might actually be attainable. Here are 10 suggestions, in no particular order:

Bethie's List of Attainible New Years Resolutions

1) Resolve to purchase exercise DVD's. This is a win-win for everyone. a) DVD's are cheaper than the cost of a gym membership. b) You won't clog up the gym. c) When you get sick of the DVD's, you can trade them with other "ressies". Finally, d) this resolution only states that you will purchase the DVD's, it does not state that you actually have to work out to one.

2) Resolve to walk more. This one gets you moving and off the couch. It's easy. Take one step. Take another. Repeat. See? Told you it was easy. It will reduce carbon emissions from driving. Also, if people in the Chicago-land area are walking more, they can avoid the new craptastic fees that have come into place in 2012 including; Increased parking rates, increased rates on parking meters, increased city stickers and increased tolls.

3) Resolve to read more. Like my blog. (Shameless plug)

4) Resolve to become "A Person of Mystery". You don't actually have to do much, you just have to keep your mouth shut (ok, this one could be hard for a lot of people). One way to do this is to hide from people and cease communication. Another is to not walk around naked at the gym with your 40 year old breasts flapping about. (Clearly, I'm still scared from this morning.)

5) Resolve to avoid Barracudas. It just makes sense, those things are mean!

6) Resolve to put peanut butter on more things. If your allergic, try almond butter or Nutella... Hmm...put peanut butter on Nutella...

7) Resolve to be nice and friendly. Nobody likes an asshole. This would be a much better world if people stopped running their mouths, took a deep breath and just let things go or took a walk to blow off steam (see option #2 for walking details and benefits).

8) Resolve to catch up on your correspondence. Go to the post office, buy some stamps. Send people letters through snail-mail. Everyone loves mail that's not a bill! What? You don't know what to write? Send a thank you note (people should show more gratitude anyway). Or go to Hallmark. They have postage paid cards and post cards now. All you have to do is sign your name and address it. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy! The US Post Office has had to make cut-backs due to email and the internet. You'd be helping the economy by saving (or even creating) a postal employee's job. Doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy?

9) On the list of not so fuzzy resolutions (hey, I needed one for the slightly evil readers), Resolve to help others break their resolutions. Again, slightly evil, but fun! This one keeps not only you, but other "ressies" out of the gym. Use this time to bond, plot ways to get others out of their resolutions (most people fail anyway), or get some hot chocolate.

10) Resolve not to make any more resolutions. When people ask why, tell them that you love your awesome-self just the way you are and that you don't need to change.

If you haven't made a resolution yet, I hope this helps you choose one. If you've made a resolution to run a marathon, awesome (If it's a fall one, you don't have to start training until June). If you've resolved to make a "lifestyle change", I hope this gives you an option for something immediately satisfying and allows you to wait until the gym clears out to get yourself in shape.

It just takes a minute...

I know it's been a while since I've blogged (sorry, Elaine!!). I've just been a busy girl!! I know that I have some posting to do on both of my blogs! I just wanted to take the time to post some info for a cause near and dear to me.

Most of you know that there is a special place in my heart for those serving in our country's military. Having been the daughter of a man who served in the Navy during Vietnam, and the granddaughter of one who was a Marine in WWII, I learned at an early age to respect the gift I've been given at the cost of those who have served. I came to appreciate this much more when I traveled overseas.

I've always believed that even if you don't agree with the reasons that our troops have been deployed it is still our responsibility to support them (I mean, do you really think someone wants to be sent thousands of miles way to a giant sandbox away from their families and friends?!?) I realize these men and women, are just doing their jobs. If one doesn't agree with the allocation of troops and funding it's our responsibility to elect those who will ensure their care.

Anywho, off my soap box and on to my point. While there are many sites that offer ways to send care packages to soldiers (anysoldier.com, Soldier's Angel's, The Hugs Project, ect...) here's a even simpler (and cheaper) way to show a soldier you care. Let'sSayThanks.com donates cards to send to troops that are overseas. It's as simple as a few clicks of the mouse. Second, Walter Reed, VA accepts general cards to recovering soldiers. I know that I always have a few extra holiday cards from the boxes, and maybe you do too! Just send it off to the hospital, and send some cheer to someone. Here's the address:

A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue,NW
Washington,D.C. 20307-5001

I hope that you all can find time to spread some cheer. It only takes a minute!!

(Thanks to Petra for the link and Mom for the info!)

Gettin' My Shamrock On

So...according to a bartender at a bar that I frequent; for St. Patrick's Day I made quite a performance. I was apparently dancing on the bar singing a parody of a song that I made up...

Clearly I thought that "My shamrocks bring all the boys to the yard...(Damn right! They're better than yours!)" was going to be a hit.

Are there any pictures out there? I hate to admit it, but that sounds like something I would do...

An Irish Blessing

Three of my favorite Irish Blessings:
(Three because a shamrock has three leaves??? Sure that sounds good!)

  • May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be ever at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face, and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

  • These things, I warmly wish for you-
    Someone to love,
    Some work to do,
    A bit of o’ sun,
    A sip o’ beer,
    And a guardian angel
    Always near.

  • May you be half an hour in Heaven before the Devil knows you’re dead!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy Superbowl!!

Many of you know that today is my favorite holiday. It's the football equivlant to Christmas! I know, I know, I know....my Bears didn't make it to the Superbowl this year. Yeah, yeah--wasn't even close. I don't want to hear it!!! (BARB and JOE!!) But my fellow Bears fans, there are some things for which we can be happy:

1. The Bears beat Green Bay--twice!!! This still makes me giggle!(And constitutes a perfect season for my mother.--If only it were really that easy.)

2. Devin Hester is still under contract.

3. The Bears had a less than stellar season, therefore, there will be some fair-weather fans giving up their season tickets, thus moving me up on the wait list! (Hey, a girl can dream!)

4. 14th draft pick over all...here's hoping we don't have another Cade McNown incident.

5. For those of you who are not Patriots fans, Bears fans can take comfort that they are playing the Giants. If you go back to the 1934 championship game, the Bears went in to that game undefeated. Unfortunately, due to shitty field conditions and a lack of shoes (seriously, the Bears played barefoot--no pun, it's true!), the Bears perfect season was ruined by the New York Giants. With any luck history will repeat itself. (Sorry, I can't stand Bill Bellachek!!! I say Giants by 3!)

6. Finally, the last thing that will get me through...10 days until pitchers and catchers report!! (Go, Cubs GO! It's our year!!!)

Pi Day

Happy Pi Day!!

Reguardless if you decide to calculate it or eat it--hope it's a good one!!

(For those of you who aren't sure what I mean, Pi is the mathmatical number 3.14 that never ends... Today is March 14th, AKA--Pi Day!-- Yeah, I'm a dork, whatelse is new?)

Auld Lang Syne

My plans for New Years involved watching the Bears/Packers game (in hindsight, it's a good thing I missed it!). Definitely my kind of party...but when Barb called upset that someone had bailed on their plans I headed to Milwaukee to cheer her up and for some New Years fun!

The evening started with sparkling pomegranate martinis, pizza and Coupling. Then we headed to the River Center for the Cake concert. There was all sorts of fun! Wandering carnies (although we didn't really see any), fun hats, jugglers, psychics and caricature artists.

We immediately got tiaras...

I enjoyed the faux-hawk celebrating the New Year.

We met two Johns while waiting in a VERY long line for our tarot cards to be read.

Fortunately for us, we were the last to get readings for the night. The psychic told me some very insightful things (Happy New Year to ME!).

I found a "cape" and Barb found our seats. (I AM BATMAN!!)

I tried to get a picture of the fire juggler, but security stopped me from taking a picture. I did get a covert shot of the stage with my phone when Cake was on stage.

We ended the evening with my cape flapping in the lake breeze...and me giving it to some girl who's feet hurt and was being carried back to the car by her boyfriend. She was freezing, and needed it more than I did.

Cheers to the New Year!

An Eventful Thursday

It’s been nice visiting the family in sunny Florida. It hasn’t been too warm… but it sure beats Chicago weather!

I’ve been doing the usual, shopping with Mom (fyi—if you’re ever in the Palm Beach area, there’s this Mexican restaurant where they make guacamole table side…it’s amazing!!—Mom, what’s the name of the place??), hanging out with Jack (check out his Christmas Train display!)

visiting Grandma and Grandpa, going to prison....

That’s right, yesterday, instead of being in a bar, I was behind bars.

My mother has been a CCI (Canine Companions for Independence) puppy raiser. Since her last dog, Tonka, was taken in to the program, she has been training inmates and their puppies in the Sheriff’s Drug Farm Boot Camp Facility.

Thursday morning, I was up bright and early to go to the prison to help her with the days class. Sergeant Harris was there to escort us to the space used for the classroom. Mom leads a class of 8 inmates, and 4 dogs. Evenly divided with men and women, I helped the prisoners work the dogs and practice the commands. Sergeant Harris even took me to see the woman’s dormitory.

It was an interesting experience. It's definately run like a boot camp, but all the prisoners were quite respectful (ma'am, yes, ma'am!). There was some confusion with one of the guards, apparently, he thought I was in High School (good, grief!! I'm a grown-up damn it!!). I was not allowed to take pictures in the prison, but here’s pictures of two of the dogs, Tash (black lab) and Solis (golden mix).

After a morning of puppy class at the prison, we had dinner at Kee, my favorite restaurant in Palm Beach!

Here’s Grandpa, happy to have his scotch (Johnny Walker Black, easy on the rocks--can any one find any ice in his glass? I sure can't!).

Gram with her coffee.

Me and the Grandparents.

Hi, Mom!

Jack and I.

The trip was short this time, but it was nice to see everyone!

Christmas Surprises

After the game, I headed home to pack for Christmas. I was flying to Florida to surprise my mom for Christmas. I only got about an hour of sleep before I had to hop in a cab and head to O’Hare.

What got me through the day?

Thank goodness for caffeine!

Mom was definitely surprised! I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen her speechless!

After the surprise, I had some time to freshen up, and then headed to Christmas dinner with the family!

Merry Christmas to ME!!

After my bout with the flu, I was concerned that my Christmas Eve plans would be squelched. Fortunately, I’m a CHAMP and hopped out of bed at 4:30 am rarein’ to go!!

I hit the shower, got everything together to drive to Laura’s house. I did stop for bagels. The people a Dunkin’ Donuts found me quite entertaining. I was skipping through the store in my Butkus Jersey and Bears Santa Hat. For some reason, they decided, that I didn’t need any coffee. (I wonder way? Caffeine Nazis!!)

Any who, I made it to Laura’s a little before 6:00—ROADTRIP!!

For those of you out of the loop, Laura, Nancy, Rob and I were heading to Detroit to see the Bears game!!

Here’s Laura and Nancy waiting for the game to start,

The Bears Santa hat made it’s debut at this game. (I love “Bears Wear!”) I also love my Bears Fan! It also says, "Go Chicago" and "Number One"--It was part of my Christmas present from Becca. She found it in rual Iowa...who knew?! (Thanks, Becca!!)

The view from our seats.

They actually sell Guinness at Ford Field!! Merry Christmas to me!!

Go Bears!!!

During the game, there’s a game to play, sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts, where each level of the stadium is either “Cuppy the Coffee”, a Breakfast Sandwich or a Donut, and they race on the screen. I’m sure many of you have seen a similar thing at other sporting events. Well, at Ford field, people dressed as these characters finish the on screen race by running out of the tunnel and onto the field. It was hilarious when the breakfast sandwich fell on the field and couldn’t get up. If you look carefully, you can see them in the top of the pic.

After a heart stopping ending…Bears win!!

Here are the happy Bears fans…

And disgruntled Lions fans…I know you can’t read the signs…but they’re really rude to Millen. (Thanks to the friendly Lions fans for the pic).

It’s time to head home, Rob, leaves the stadium with his Bears tail.

This road trip was awesome!! Thanks to Laura for finding tickets.

GO BEARS!!

Thoughts on Decorations

Since she was in between residency interviews, Barb and I went to Lincolnwood to check out their Christmas lights. Some of these houses are actually professionally decorated. There's one house that is my favorite, that we made sure to see. It has a three story Christmas tree in the house, where the "top" of the tree actually appears to be poking through the roof. They also have a sleigh with real deer attached to it.

I told Barb, that I love to see this house every year because "It's just not Christmas with out dead reindeer!" We got to wondering, where does one store taxidermied reindeer? Those two deer have been out there for years, so they must keep them somewhere. I'm not sure I'd want them stacked in my garage or attic. EW!

On the way home, I happened to notice a house that I had talked about in an earlier post.

The house that I had mentioned back in September as putting out their Christmas lights, actually had no lights on it!! This house is even more messed up than I thought. Why does one put UP lights in September to not have anything remotely holiday durning the time period it's expected!? WTF?!?!

Holy Cow, that was fun!

Yesterday was the last day of the IAEA conference. I had fun making my Haitian Spirit bottle. Something interesting that I learned about them is that these bottles were used as a part of the Vodou religious altars and ceremonies. The spirit part does not refer to keeping a soul in the bottle, rather alcoholic spirits. The liquor (rum, whiskey or gin) is kept in the bottle until they are needed in the ceremony. Then a priest or priestess sips from the bottle and sprays the liquor on the alter and persons requesting the ceremony. The spirits bless whom or what ever was sprayed.

Here’s my bottle:

And yes, the protective talisman on top of the bottle is in fact Liono from Thundercats! When I found him in the collage materials, I knew he was my “protective entity”!

Here are some others that were made at the workshop at the Intuit Center.

There were even free 15 minute massages at the last event. The last event was a vendor give away, and you don’t know what you’re going to get. Unfortunately, I won 13 lbs. of clay. Not that I’m not grateful or anything (my 6th graders are going to make something fun with it!), but lugging home a huge bag of clay on the el sucked!

After the IAEA conference, I went with Julia to a Halloween Party.

Here’s Julia and I all dressed up. Julia is “Holy Cow” (you can’t see her wings) and I’m the pirate (Arrgh! I forgot me eye patch!).

I found that people knew what I was faster when I carried around this prop from the bar…”but WHY is all the rum gone!”

It was fun to meet new people, and talk with Tina and Pete. I think I needed to avoid the Ghostbuster.

I also spent the evening “hitting on” Mike—he’s such a good listener!

Thanks Julia for bringing me along! Good Times!
